Sandgrounders throw away a 0-2 lead against 10 men Macclesfield Town

Southport FC threw away a two goal lead in the last 10 minutes as they were held to a draw against local rivals Macclesfield Town on New Years Day.

Chris Lever scored twice for Sandgrounders early on but they were pegged back just before the end when Macclesfield striker Matthew Barnes Homer also scored twice.

Southport started the game well and they took the lead after only 8 minutes when Shaun Whalley was broke free in the penalty area and he was fouled by Craig Braham Barrett. Up stepped Lever to fire the penalty home.

Lever scored again a couple of minutes later when Braham Barrett failed to clear his lines in the area and the Southport man scored with a low shot.

Sandgrounders took control of the match and they were helped when Macclesfield were reduced to ten men after Ryan Jackson was sent off for a bad challenge on Whalley.

Southport had more chances in the second-half as Karl Ledsham went close and Chris Almond then had a shot that was saved by keeper Lance Cronin.

Macclesfield hit back late on when Barnes Home converted a cross from Waide Fairhurst. Barnes Homer scored again to draw the home side level by firing home the rebound after a save from keeper Tony McMillan.
