First-half goals from Paul Smith and George Donnelly helped Southport win at fellow Conference strugglers Aldershot to move four points clear of trouble.

The visitors went ahead on 19 minutes when an unmarked Smith poked home after being picked out by Charlie Joyce.

Southport then extended their lead six minutes later when Smith crossed for Donnelly to find the bottom corner.

Shots striker Brett Williams pulled one back on 58 minutes when he headed home Jordan Roberts’ cross.

But it could have been a bigger winning margin, Donnelly grazing the post with a long-range effort late on as Aldershot stretched their winless streak to three league games.

The Shots remain 18th, but are now only eights points clear of trouble as Welling won at Lincoln.
