Southport MP John Pugh calls Hillsborough ‘a national embarrassment’

Pugh calls on Cameron to apologise for the nation to Hillsborough families

Southport’s Member of Parliament John Pugh has called on the Prime Minister to make a formal apology on the floor of the House of Commons to all the families and survivors of the Hillsborough tragedy.

Responding to the jury’s verdict, John Pugh MP said that the Hilssborough debacle was a ‘national embarrassment.’

Speaking at the conclusion of a two year inquest that found that 96 fans were unlawfully killed, and that Liverpool FC supporters did not cause the stadium disaster, Mr Pugh questioned why it had taken so long to get to the truth. He said:

“It is a national embarrassment that getting to the truth has taken so long and extended the hurt, pain and anguish of the families but also the wider community in Merseyside.

“Some family members have not been able to see justice finally handed down. They deserved better than years of hiding behind brick walls and civil servants.

“I call on Theresa May to accept all of the recommendations in full and I call on the Prime Minister to make a formal apology on the floor of the House to the Hillsborough families and Liverpool.”
