Private Hire vs Taxi Drivers: What’s the Difference?

    By Carmen Troy4th December 2025

When it comes to getting around the UK, especially in busy cities like London, people often face the choice between hiring a taxi or booking a private hire vehicle. While both are designed to get passengers from one location to another, there are key differences in how they operate, the services they provide, and the customer experiences they deliver. Understanding these differences can help you make the right choice for your journey.

    Taxis: The Traditional Choice

Taxis, often referred to as “black cabs” in London, are perhaps the most iconic form of licenced transport. The main benefit of taxis is that they can be hailed from the side of the road or found waiting at one of the many taxi ranks. Taxis can also be ordered in advance either by phone or app service. Taxi drivers are highly trained and licenced, often taking an arduous “Knowledge of London” test that requires drivers to commit literally thousands of routes, streets and landmarks to memory. This ensures passengers are with someone who is familiar with their surroundings and licenced to take care of them.

One of the obvious benefits to taxis is that if you are in a busy area they are often immediately available. You can wave down a cab and be on your way within minutes. Fares are metred and set by local authorities. In London, taxis are legally required to be wheelchair accessible.

Private Hire Vehicles: Minicabs and Chauffeurs

Private hire vehicles (PHVs) is an umbrella term for a variety of modes of transport including minicabs, chauffeur-driven cars and app-based taxis like Uber. To differentiate, PHVs have to be pre-booked and cannot legally stop to pick up passengers in the street, a main difference in their regulation and one that is often confused by passengers.

    Minicabs

Minicabs are one of the most common forms of private hire transport and can be booked through licenced offices or by phone, as well as the now more popular mobile apps. Minicabs do not use metres like taxis do, and the price is usually set at the time of booking, usually making them cheaper and more predictable than a taxi. For this reason they are often the preferred method of transport for longer journeys such as airport or intercity travel, as well as being a more flexible form of transport, as you are able to choose vehicle types to suit your group size or luggage needs.

    Chauffeur Services

At the premium end of the private hire spectrum are chauffeur services. These offer up a more upmarket car, perhaps a luxury saloon or executive vehicle, and a professionally trained driver who is more concerned with providing a superior service. Chauffeurs are often used for business travel, weddings or any other special occasions, where image and comfort are just as important as the journey. Chauffeurs often include waiting time, baggage and a personal level of customer care in their prices unlike standard minicabs.

Key Differences Between Taxis and Private Hire

The most noticeable difference between taxis and private hire cars lies in how they are booked. You can hail a taxi at any time whereas a private hire car will always need to be pre-booked. Pricing is another factor: Taxis use a metre, which charges a regulated rate. A private hire vehicle will normally be charged a fixed agreed fare.

The service style is also different. A taxi is for immediate, unplanned journeys, and that’s its convenience factor when you need it. Private hire offers flexibility and choice. Anything from budget friendly minicabs to chauffeur level limousines, the choice of service type or standard of car comes down to passenger preference, price point or journey type. Vehicle types are also different. Taxis are generally standard vehicles, wheelchair accessible for example, while private hire cars are more varied in make and comfort.

Should I Book a Taxi or Minicab?

Taxi and private hire vehicle hire services are both a viable way to travel. However, some variables have to be considered before one can come to the conclusion that one is more appropriate than the other. A big consideration should be time. If time is of the essence, taxis are preferable as they do not require booking. If money and price are more important and you need certainty of cost, a minicab is the most logical choice. If you’re interested in luxury and looking for a more personal experience, for a significant event, a chauffeur-driven car hire may be the best choice.

Taxi and private hire are both important in London, as the different characteristics of each serve specific purposes. Taxis provide unrivalled accessibility, regulation, and convenience for customers. Private hire vehicles are a great option for those who require a more flexible service or can pre-book a journey for a cheaper and more luxurious ride. Ultimately, it all depends on your budget, your journey, and your preferred experience.
