PREVIEW | Southport Vs Guiseley

8th January 2019

Southport have kicked-off the new year with two draws in their first two games, Liam Watson’s men will be hoping to find their winning edge again as they take on Guiseley on Tuesday night (8th January, 7:45pm KO).

The unbeaten run the Port are currently on is truly impressive, showing the form of a team who should be much higher up in the table.

After a dismal start to the campaign things have seemingly turned around for the side, but a close shave against bottom side Nuneaton has proved they can’t get carried away.

The next opponents, Guiseley, sit only one place behind Southport in the league and will also be looking at moving up the table with games in hand over other teams.

The team, managed by joint managers Marcus Bignot and Russ O’Neill, enter the game unbeaten in their last three games, with two draws and one win.

The 2-1 victory over second placed Bradford would’ve been very satisfying for the Lions after losing 5-1 against them in the reverse fixture on Boxing Day.

Like Southport, it took a while for Guiseley to get off the mark with a victory this season, taking them till match day six to get their first win.

In fact finding the winning edge has been a problem throughout the season for the side, having the joint highest amount of draws in division.

They also have the lowest amount of defeats out the teams in the bottom half of the table, with six, meaning they will be difficult for Liam Watson’s side to break down. Plus the side also had success in the Emirates FA Cup this season in front of the cameras.

Following on from finishing bottom in the National League last year, this is not the bounce back season the club would’ve hoped for but none the less they will still prove tough opponents.

Equipped with forward Rowan Liburd, who has eight goals so far this campaign, Guiseley may also be able to test the home side defence despite a low scoring record.

With both teams hoping to move up the table, this game will do victor the world of good in climbing up the division.
