PREVIEW | Southport V Alfreton Town

29th December 2018

It’s been a Merry Christmas for Southport fans so far this period, with positive results seeing the club climb up the table away from relegation, they’ll hope to end the year on a high against Alfreton at home.

It has been both a mixed 12 months and a mixed season for the Port but of late their has been many positives to take, especially with recent wins over Ashton United and high-flying Chester.

The last opponents of 2018, Alfreton Town, currently sit two places and four points ahead of Southport in the Vanarama National League North, but have also played two games more.

The meeting back in August between the pair was one to forget for Liam Watson and his side.

The 3-1 defeat to the Reds meant Southport had only accumulated four points in the opening seven games, and would go nearly two months before claiming another league win.

Alfreton’s form is very mixed, but have managed a draw and a win so far over the festive period.

This was needed for Billy Heath’s side after an embarrassing 7-1 defeat to Spennymoor Town earlier on this month.

That result may have been a clear blip, but can give Southport confidence in breaking down the defence.

The Reds will provide an attacking threat of their own, with a number of players on five goals this season, but no clear standout goal scorer.

The likes of Styche will need to be watched, especially with goals in his last four games since joining his new side.

This match has the ability to end the year on a high and also boost morale heading into 2019 which off current form should provide plenty to cheer about!
