PREVIEW | Leamington V Southport

16th March 2019

After securing a second cup final of the season in midweek Southport head into the weekend hoping to get back on to winning ways in the league as they travel to Leamington.

The 3-1 win over Rylands in the Semi-Final of the Liverpool CFA Senior Cup was the perfect response to last weekend’s defeat to Boston United.

This weekend’s opponents Leamington sit below the Port in 18th place on 37 points, but still seven above the danger of the relegation zone.

Southport fans will still have good memories of when these two sides met back in January as a five-star second-half performance saw them come from behind at the break to win the game 5-1.

Doubles from Brad Bauress and Dion Charles, and one from David Morgan secured the biggest league victory of the season so far, but would also be the last game of a long unbeaten run that stretched back to October.

That defeat was is just part of a difficult run of form for the Brakes which has seen them slip down the table.

Since the game at the Merseyrail Community Stadium, Leamington have won one, drawn three and lost three.

That win came against Altrincham, with the 3-0 scoreline being the only victory in 2019 for Paul Holleran’s side, and only their second since the end of November.

Following a run of four defeats in a row, Leamington managed to get themselves a point in their last outing against Chester.

An 83rd minute goal from Ahmed Obeng levelled the scored 1-1 to finally stop the rot after a particularly sticky patch for the Brakes.

Despite their problems Leamington still have a dangerous player up the top of the pitch.

Colby Bishop has bagged 15 goals so far this campaign, and is the fifth top scorer in the division.

Despite Bishop’s goals, a lack of victories for Leamington will give Southport confidence they can bag three points in their travels.
