Cambridge United welcome Southport to the R Costings Abbey Stadium on Saturday as they look to maintain their unbeaten start to the new season.

The U’s followed up on their opening-day draw at Forest Green Rovers with a 2-1 victory over Lincoln City, while Southport are yet to record their first win of the new campaign after a 1-1 draw with Grimsby Town and a 3-3 draw with Alfreton Town on Tuesday night.

U’s boss Jez George has shipped out three players on loan this week in order to help the trio build up their match fitness.

Strikers Michael Gash and Adam Marriott have joined Braintree and Bishop’s Stortford respectively, while right-winger Jack Eades has joined Histon FC on a month-long loan.

In stark contrast, Southport boss Liam Watson appears to have a lack of attacking options at his disposal for Saturday’s clash.

Strikers Shaun Whalley and Tony Gray are expected to miss out through injury, paving the way for new signing Darren Stephenson to start after joining the Sandgrounders on a permanent deal last weekend.

Looking ahead to the clash, Watson told the Southport Visiter: “It will be a tough game.

“They have made a tough start and have made some really good signings. They are a lot of people’s dark horses. Source Blue Square Bet
