PREVIEW | Ashton Athletic V Southport

27th February 2019

After Saturday’s league draw, Southport head into midweek action in the Semi-Final of the Lancashire FA Partners Foundation Challenge Trophy.

The goalless draw against FC United of Manchester is something Liam Watson will be hoping that his side can build on.

To do that they’ll have to overcome lower league opposition, Ashton Athletic, for a shot at reaching the final.

Along the way to reach this stage the Port have overcome Holker Old Boys (5-2), Clitheroe (6-0) and most recently a 3-1 win over Garstang back in December.

To reach the final at the University of Bolton Stadium in April, Watson’s side need to put a good performance in at the County Ground in Leyland.

Ashton enter this game on the back of a defeat against North West Counties Division leaders, City of Liverpool.

They do currently sit in a healthy position in the league, occupying 7th place on 45 points.

Ashton will hope to be successful in this competition and repeat their achievement from 2017 when they were crowned champions.

Meanwhile Southport’s last victory came in 2010 and they will hope to put that right and claim another nine years on.

It will be a good match on Wednesday evening with a final at stake for the two sides.
