Purse thefts from bags

Recently there has been an increase in the number of incidents inside shops in the Chapel Street and Lord Street areas of Southport, where purses have been taken from bags.

Merseyside Police officers are now urging people to take extra care when out in the town centre.

A Merseyside police spokesman said: “Recently there has been an increase in the number of incidents inside shops in the Lord Street and Chapel Street areas of Southport, where purses have been taken from bags.”

“Carry the handbag with the clasp next to your body. If your bag is fastened with a zip, it is advisable to carry it with the zip opener facing the front so it is in your sight, making it harder for the thief to open the bag without your knowledge.

“Be particularly aware of protecting your bag when you are concentrating on choosing an article you wish to buy. It gives the thief an opportunity if you are distracted.

“Avoid leaving your bag on the floor if you are trying on a garment.

“Never leave your bag in a shopping trolley, keep it with you at all times

“Bells that can be attached to purses are available in the Cop Shop in Wayfarer’s Arcade in Southport town centre.

“If anyone attempts to take your purse, the movement of extracting it from the bag makes the bells ring, alerting the owner.”
