Following enquiries we can confirm the incident on land adjacent to Royal Birkdale Golf Course yesterday evening (Thursday 11 April 2019) involved a paramotor, not a microlight as originally reported.

At around 7pm police and other emergency services were called to the land near Royal Birkdale Golf Course following reports the paramotor had crashed.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue attended to extinguish the fire caused by the crash, and the North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance. A man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A police investigation is underway on behalf of the Coroner to establish the identity of the man and the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Road closures will be in place on the Coastal Road including Shore Road and Weld Road and we advise motorists to avoid the area.
