Police forced to backtrack on mistaken identify sex offence case

28th January 2020

Earlier this month we were made aware of a post by a group on Facebook accusing a man from Ormskirk of sexual offences.

The man, 55, was arrested by police and later released under investigation. We have looked into the allegation and are satisfied it is a case of mistaken identity.

We are confident the man originally named by this group was not involved in any attempts to groom children or commit sex offences and he has no previous convictions for such offences.

He has been released no further action.

The post, including video and images, has been removed by the administrator of the Facebook page involved.

We understand the desire to protect children but any member of the public who has information about child sexual abuse, online or otherwise, should get in contact with the police so we can investigate and bring people to justice.

Following further enquiries, a 44-year-old man from Liverpool has been arrested on suspicion of sexual offences in connection with the investigation and bailed to February 24.
