Emergency services have been called to the scene of a near fatal accident after a dog broke free from its owner and ran across the Formby bypass.

Drivers swerved to avoid the dog and two women stopped their cars to coax the pet to safety.

Emergency services were called to help manage traffic during the ordeal but nobody was hurt.

The dog is thought to have escaped from a car in nearby Tesco car park and panicked before bolting into the dual carriageway.

Police have praised the quick thinking actions of two women to stopped to help and have thanked drivers for their patience while the dog was rescued.
