Police appeal for information after woman stabbed by partner at Virginia Street home

Police have released an updated statement after a man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at a property on Virginia Street this morning.

A 50-year-old male was arrested after assaulting his partner who was found with knife wounds to the neck and abdomen.

Police have also asked anyone suffering domestic violence to come forward.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm officers remain at house in Virginia Street in Southport following an incident earlier today, Friday 25th June, in which a woman was stabbed.

“Emergency services were contacted at just after 9.30am following reports a 48 year-old woman had been assaulted and suffered multiple stab wounds.

“The woman has been taken to hospital for treatment for her injuries which will require surgery. She is currently in a critical condition.

“A 50 year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody where he will be questioned by detectives.

“The incident is being treated as domestic-related and detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

“Enquiries are ongoing and safeguarding procedures are being carried out by specialist officers.

Detective Inspector Paula Furlong said: “Our enquiries remain ongoing and I would continue to ask anyone with information which could assist our investigation to contact us.

“We take the issue of domestic abuse very seriously and will continue to work alongside our partners to identify the best way to tackle it.

“I would encourage anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse to have the courage to report it to us and we will support you in every way we can.

“Similarly I would ask if you are aware of someone who is a victim of domestic abuse – whether that be a friend, family member, colleague or neighbour – please contact us so that we can take positive action and offer them the support that they need.”
