Planned North West roadworks – Monday 2 to Sunday 8 July 2018

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 29 June but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. Drivers looking for roadworks information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west

M6 Junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)

Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers. The scheme is due to be completed in spring 2019.

M6 Junction 19 Knutsford

Occasional work – such as ground investigations – is taking place as part of plans for a major improvement of the roundabout and junction. This requires occasional overnight lane and slip road closures.

M6 Junction 20 (Swineyard Lane)

Maintenance and repair work is taking place to the bridge which carries Swineyard Lane over the M6 at junction 20 near Sworton Heath, south of Lymm. Hard shoulder closures, narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be in place in both directions to ensure the maintenance scheme can be delivered safely. The scheme is due to be finished in early 2019.

M6 Junctions 26 to 27 (Gathurst Viaduct)

The bridge decks at Gathurst Viaduct are being re-waterproofed and resurfaced during overnight work. Some overnight closures of both carriageways will be needed, between 9pm and 6am, with clearly-signed diversions in place. A 40mph speed limit and narrow lanes through a contraflow system will be in place at all times.

M6 Junctions 35 (Carnforth) to 34 (Lancaster)

Work to resurface the southbound carriageway will resume on Monday (2 July) with 5 nights of 10pm to 6am closures, with the closure and diversion routes in operation from junction 36 of the motorway and taking drivers back onto the motorway at junction 34.

M6 Junctions 36 (Kirkby Lonsdale) to 37 (Sedbergh)

A project is taking place to replace safety barriers and improve drainage on the M6 between junctions 37 and 36, with one lane closed in each direction. A temporary 50mph speed limit will be in place for the safety of drivers and workers, and the scheme is due to be finished by the end of September.

M53 Junction 3

A maintenance project to repair the two bridges over the motorway at junction 3 is continuing with narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit. Sections of the roundabout will be closed overnight occasionally to resurface and re-waterproof the bridge decks. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of July.

M55 eastbound

A £1.5 million project to totally resurface the eastbound carriageway between junction 4 at Blackpool and junction 1 at Broughton is underway. Work is currently taking place between junctions 3 and 1, involving 8pm to 6am overnight closures of the carriageway with clearly-signed diversions in place. The carriageway will also be closed between junctions 4 and 3 overnight on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 July. The work is due to be completed in July.

M56 Junctions 1 to 4 Sharston Link

Work is taking place to upgrade the safety barriers and improve drainage on the M56. Temporary narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be in place during the project and some overnight lane and carriageway closures will also be needed. The scheme is due to be finished in the autumn.

M57/M58 Switch Island

Construction work is taking place on a £3 million scheme to improve journeys and safety at Switch Island. All of the work will take place overnight to minimise disruption to drivers and the scheme is due to be completed by the end of winter 2018/19.

M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)

A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers. Overnight closures will take place between 10pm and 6am, and drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversion routes. The following closures are planned for next week:

M60 clockwise, junctions 8 to 12 – 5 nights from Monday 2 July M60 anticlockwise, junctions 18 to 17 – 2 nights from Monday 2 July M60 anticlockwise, junctions 15 to 12 – 2 nights from Thursday 5 July M60 anticlockwise, junctions 12 to 8 – 2 nights from Saturday 7 July

M61 Junction 9 (Blackburn)

The exit slip road on the northbound carriageway of the M61 at junction 9 will be closed overnight for approximately one week from Friday 22 June. The work will take place from 9pm until 5am, or until 7am at weekends.

A66 Dacre and Hutton junctions

A project is being carried out to resurface the westbound carriageway along this dual carriageway section of the A66, with a contraflow system in place. The scheme is due to be finished by the end of July.

A590 Pigwilly Wood to M6

Resurfacing work is taking place on the eastbound carriageway between the Brettargh Holt roundabout and junction 36 of the M6. A contraflow arrangement is in place to allow eastbound drivers to use a lane of the westbound dual carriageway. A mixture of overnight closures (8pm to 6am) on both the westbound and eastbound carriageways are also due to be used between the 27 June and the 1 July 2018. The work is expected to be completed by early July.

A663 Broadway

Resurfacing work is due to start on Monday 2 July at Broadgate roundabout and the link roads between the A663 Broadway and the M60 slip road at junction 21. The project also includes repainting road markings and replacing the anti-skid surface. Some overnight closures will be in place between 8pm and 5am. The scheme is due to be finished in mid-July.
