Parkrun eyes second year at top of visually impaired runner table

17th April 2018

A Park run held in Southport is bucking for a second year running the national trend for the impressive number of blind or visually impaired participants who take on the challenge each weekend.

The huge success of the Hesketh Park-based Southport Parkrun has hit a new record for the number of such runners who take part.

Half a dozen visually impaired entrants each with a guide take part each weekend over the short course – a figure which is more than any of the other 594 Parkruns staged throughout the UK each week.

“This is a great achievement for Southport,” said one of the event directors

“The Southport Parkrun had set the previous national record of four visually impaired runners and their guides participating and now they’ve surpassed that figure, which is tremendous.

“Reaching out to visually impaired people who wanted to improve their fitness was the idea of Mike Leatherbarrow, one of the Parkrun Core Team and a guide runner for several years.
