Open Day For Southport’s New Leaf Garden Centre

12th January 2016

Preparing for this month’s New Leaf open day are service users Billy Moss (front) and (sitting) Suzanne Holt and Kenny Jones with (from left) staff members Pauline Gillett and Barbara Gannon and Service Development Manager Joy Worthington.

A Southport garden centre that provides opportunities for people with learning and physical disabilities to learn horticultural and retail skills is inviting Sefton residents to an open day later this month.

The event will take place at the New Leaf centre at Park Lodge Greenhouses on Rotten Row from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday January 20th.

New Leaf is one of a number of similar activities run by New Directions, Sefton’s leading adult social care provider, to provide vocational opportunities for its clients.

Visitors at the open day will be able to tour the garden centre site – which includes a large Victorian greenhouse – and view the centre’s range of winter bedding plants, shrubs, perennials and pot plants.

In addition there will be displays of craft items produced by people who attend similar New Directions activities – including bird boxes, bug hotels and garden furniture – and refreshments will also be  available.

Visitors will also be able to meet some of the service users who learn a range of useful life and work skills at New Leaf, from designing and planting hanging baskets in the greenhouses to retail and customer service skills in the garden centre shop.

According to Service Development Manager Joy Worthington, the aim of the open day is to raise awareness of the excellent work that is being done at the centre.

This includes taking on additional horticultural project work, from managing the New Directions show garden at Southport Flower Show to being commissioned to create a new roof garden at the Investment Centre office building in Bootle  town centre.

Joy Worthington commented: “The open day will be a great opportunity to showcase what we do and get the message across that we’re open all year round, so we’re hoping for a very good turnout on the day.

“And, as always at New Leaf, customers will have the satisfaction of knowing that any money they spend at the centre will be ploughed back into providing more resources and opportunities for our people.”
