Roadworks information for Highways Agency roads in the North West – seven days beginning Monday 10September 2012.

Please note: There may be heavy traffic around the M6 Junction 32 and M55 due to Blackpool Illuminations until Sunday 4 November


M6, Junctions 15 to 19 Cheshire

Overnight lane closures will be in place on the northbound side of the motorway between Junction 15 at Stoke and Junction 19 at Knutsford for resurfacing. The work will take place from Monday 3 until Thursday 13 September, between 10pm and 5am, and involve some slip road closures. Diversions will be in place.

A66 Brough

A scheme is underway to improve drainage on the A66 near Brough. A mile-long section of the dual carriageway between Augill and Borrowdale Beck will be affected by the work, which will include lane closures and a 50mph speed limit. The project is due to be completed by Sunday 30 September.

M66, Junction 4 Bury

The southbound exit slip road at Junction 4 of the M66 is being extended to ease congestion and improve safety for vehicles travelling onto the eastbound side of the M62. The work is being carried out overnight and diversions will be in place when the slip road is closed. It is due to be completed by the end of September.

M6, Junction 21a Birchwood

Overnight work to resurface the exit slip roads at Junction 21a of the M6, which lead to the westbound side of the M62, is taking place until the end of November. The work is being carried out between 10pm and 5am and diversions will be in place when the slip roads are closed.

M65, Junctions 4 to 3 Blackburn

The westbound side of the M65 will be closed overnight between Junctions 4 and 3 while resurfacing work and bridge upgrades take place. The work will be carried out between 10pm and 5am and is due to last for approximately three weeks. A diversion will be in place.

 M61, Junctions 4 to 5 Bolton

Work is taking place to install a new concrete barrier in the central reservation of the M61 between Junctions 4 and 5. A 50 mph speed limit is in place through the roadworks, and there will be some lane closures overnight and at weekends.  Work is due for completion on Saturday 29 September.

M60 Junctions 4 to 2 South Manchester

A major project is underway between Junctions 4 and 2 of the M60 and along the A34 to reduce congestion and improve safety. Various traffic restrictions are currently in place including daytime hard shoulder closures along the M60 anti-clockwise for 2 miles, and a 50mph speed limit through narrowed lanes. There will also be some overnight closures during the project, which will be in place from 9pm to 5am weekdays, and 9pm to 7am at weekends. The closures will affect:

  • M56 eastbound between Junctions 3 and 1 
  • M60 anticlockwise between Junctions 5 and 3
  • The entry slip road from the northbound A34 onto the anti-clockwise M60 at Junction 3
  • M60 Junction 3 anti-clockwise exit slip road onto the southbound A34
  • M60 Junction 3 clockwise exit slip road which merges with the anti-clockwise exit slip road before meeting the southbound A34

Work is expected to be completed by Thursday 15 November.

 A56, Bury to Accrington

Work is being carried out to upgrade a nine-mile section of the A56, which links the M66 near Bury to the M65 at Accrington. The six-week project includes resurfacing, upgrading road markings, replacing reflective road studs and improving lighting. Work will be carried out overnight between 10pm and 5am during weekdays and between 10pm and 7am at weekends. Diversions will be put in place when sections of the road need to be closed. Work is due to be completed by Monday 1 October.

 A66, Brougham Bridges

There are 24 hour lane closures in place for bridge maintenance work. The work is due to be completed by the end of October.

 A66 Dubwath and Thornthwaite

There will be 24 hour lane closures with traffic signals while drainage works take place. The work is due to be completed on Tuesday 23 October.


M6 Junction 31

Drivers are warned of possible delays in the Fulwood area of Preston around the M6 Junction 31a as two extra lanes are added to the motorway slip road, which takes traffic from the motorway onto Bluebell Way. Traffic signals will also be added to the roundabout. The work is being carried out by the council on behalf of the Homes and Communities Agency.
