Here’s the latest news. We are making progress
Based on the consultation work we shared with you in Issue No4 we have gained a clear idea of what the community wants from its library. Also working with our Members Group we have put together a plan for how we can provide this along with what changes need to be made to the pavilion to allow this. Last week we submitted these plans to the Council where they will be informally reviewed by Cllr Trish Hardy, Cabinet Member – Communities and Environment on 15th October.
What are we asking for?
First off we are asking for a lot of money from the Councils Community Support Fund. This fund, of £1m, was set aside early in 2013 to support Seftons communities following the cuts to services forced on the council by the budgetary constraints. Libraries were specifically identified as likely beneficiaries of grants from this fund. Over £750k has already been shared across the Borough but so far nothing to a library project which gives us hope for success.
What needs to be done?
The pavilion hasn’t been used for three years. The electrical system needs updating and there isn’t any heating in there. There are two toilet blocks which take up a lot of space and we would like to turn one into a reading room and the other into a unisex, disabled WC with babychanging facilities and a rest room/office for the volunteers. Finally, and this is subject to agreement with the Council and Parks people, we would like to enclose the veranda area to create more reading areas and storage space. We would like this to have a Conservatory feel. It would also help with the security of the building. We want the building to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
What will our Community library provide?
Everything you would expect from a library including internet access with printing and copying facilities. Following local consultation we know the community wants activities such as familty and local history, shared reading groups, help with the internet and courses: arts, (eg painting and pastels) crafts (feltmaking, jewellery making) creative writing and much more.
How will the Library be funded in the future?
We plan to hire out the reading room to local groups for a modest rent. Also, whilst most activities will be free, courses will attract a small charge. Access to the library will be free but we plan to offer a membership which will offer a number of perks such as advance notice when we add new books. A member may be allowed to borrow more books, What do you think? We are keen to hear your views on what you would expect in return for a small annual subscription. We will also the usual hold fundraing events with raffles etc.
