NHS diabetes prevention programme to be piloted in Sefton

NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS Southport and Formby CCG have been successful in their application to become a pilot for Healthier You: the NHS diabetes prevention programme (NHS DPP).

In Sefton, a total of 1,000 patients at high risk of type 2 diabetes (500 in south Sefton and 500 in Southport and Formby) will be chosen to pilot the scheme and will receive tailored, personalised help to reduce their risk of developing the condition.

Once referred, patients will receive advice on healthy eating and improving their lifestyle over a minimum of nine months. Patients will be encouraged and guided on how to lose weight and can also take part in bespoke physical exercise programmes, both of which have been proven to reduce the risk of developing the disease.

Dr Nigel Taylor, clinical lead for diabetes at NHS South Sefton CCG, said: “There are around 7,800 adults with diabetes in south Sefton so it’s important we work on prevention. For the past 10 years we have run a community based diabetes service for patients and the pilot will certainly compliment the work we are doing already across Sefton.”

Dr Douglas Callow, NHS Southport and Formby CCG’s clinical lead for diabetes, said: “With approximately 6,500 people in Southport and Formby living with diabetes we already have a real focus on prevention. While type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented and is not linked to lifestyle, type 2 diabetes is largely avoidable through lifestyle changes. Educating people on how to successfully manage the condition in order to reduce the risk of future complications is key and we are delighted to be able to pilot the scheme in Sefton alongside the preventative work we are doing already.”

The programme will start this year with the first wave of 27 areas making up to 20,000 places available. This will roll out to the whole country by 2020 with an expected 100,000 referrals available each year after.

Four providers (Reed Momenta, Pulse Healthcare Limited trading as ICS Health and Wellbeing, Health Exchange CIC and Ingeus UK Limited) have been chosen to join the NHS Provider Framework and local health services will work with their chosen provider/s to deliver a service for their area.

Healthier You: the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme is run collaboratively by NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK.

The NHS DPP was launched in March 2015, initially in seven ‘demonstrator’ sites which have been trialling different models of finding people known to be at high risk and helping them change their lifestyles.
