Government Departments

When using the computer we become aware of websites that charge for their help. Now the public are receiving phone calls offering similar assistance. The callers may say they are acting on behalf of a Government Agency for the DVLA, Land Registry or HMRC. They may say you either owe money, you need to claim for a refund or your property could be in the incorrect Council Tax band and their company can help you to solve the problem. Various ploys are used to get your attention.

Residents in Sefton have received such phone calls from ‘polite, well- educated and helpful people.’

One resident was told she could possibly receive over £5,000 back from Sefton Council. The charge for their help would be £150 but this would be refundable. On giving the details of her Debit card the money came out of her account immediately.

Within days an official looking pack arrived with the appropriate forms and a printed declaration to say she could cancel their services within 14 days. This she immediately did by letter, followed up by daily messages asking for the promised refund. Unfortunately no money has been returned.
