Network rail repair Birkdale Crossing after bus smash

By On The Spot News27th July 2022

The public transport crisis crippling Southport nearly became a whole lot worse after a bus collided with a level crossing last night.

Emergency repairs have been carried out to the Birkdale Village level crossing overnight after a double decker bus collided with the barriers.

The direct cause of the incident is currently unknown and an investigation is underway.

Merseyrail were forced to cancel and delay trains in and out of Southport after a double decker stagecoach bus hit the barriers near to Rumah in Birkdale.

The crash happened just before 9pm on Tuesday night.

Network rail staff have since carried out a number of repairs to the crossing and declared it safe to use.

However there remains a severely restricted service today because of RMT strikes.
