Nearly 400 people back petition to support struggling Town Centre Pub

By On The Spot News6th July 2025

Nearly four hundred people have backed a petition to call on the council to financially support a struggling town centre pub that has temporarily closed due to roadworks.

Connolly’s Irish Pub on King Street has been closed temporarily for a number of weeks after its owner said they had been left high and dry by Sefton Council’s Market Quarter roadworks.

The council say the disruptive roadworks are part of the Les Transformations de Southport, which will support the town’s businesses by increasing footfall between all areas of Southport town centre.

It resulted from people saying they wanted it to be easier and more pleasant to walk, wheel, cycle, and spend time in the town.

However the works have been slammed by a number of local business owners who say they are now facing severe financial difficulties due to a drop in custom.

Some businesses, such as Connolly’s Irish Pub, have had no choice but to temporarily close.

A petition, started by Connolly’s Owner Julie Goodwin, has now been signed by 352 people.

It says “We, the undersigned, call on Sefton Council to immediately recognise and address the severe financial and operational damage suffered by Connolly’s Irish Pub on King Street, Southport — a local, independent business that has been deeply affected by long-term disruption, environmental neglect, and lack of meaningful support from the local authority.

“Over the past year, Connolly’s has endured:

“A drastic reduction in footfall due to barriers, poor access, and a deteriorating environment.

”A complete halt to investment in the adjoining property — a second hospitality venue (“Catherine’s”) — due to financial strain.

“Repeated requests for engagement and support that have been ignored or dismissed by the Council.

“These issues have caused significant financial hardship and emotional strain, putting the business and future regeneration plans at risk.”

“We believe that: Sefton Council has a duty to support small businesses affected by its decisions.
Connolly’s should be fairly compensated or provided with immediate financial support to help recover.
The Council must meet with the business owner and local MP to find a constructive resolution.”
