Nature’s Remedies (Southport) | Winter health Advice

As the nights got darker and temperatures fluctuated so much, it’s time to prepare yourself for the remainder of this winter season.

At this time of the year we’re more prone to colds and the flu, so it’s important to feed your body the (natural) winter fuel it needs to maintain its immunity.

Experiment with traditional winter foods such as root vegetables, squashes, seasonal greens, beans and whole grains to create delicious flavour combinations. You can also make nourishing dishes using cooked apples, pears and citrus fruit – all key to your body’s maintenance.

If you think your diet alone is not providing sufficient nutrients during the cold snap, try using food supplements to support the immune system. Typical winter supplements are vitamin D and C and Zinc. A good preventative supplement for winter colds is Beta Glucan to strengthen your immune system. Meanwhile Horseradish and Garlic are both are rich in compounds with potent antibacterial and antiviral activity. Probiotics are also beneficial bacteria that can help support healthy immunity.

Take advantage of the fresh air and exercise outdoors instead of curling up in front of the TV. Doing at least 30 minutes daily exercise – even a brisk walk – will keep your circulation going and help keep the viruses at bay.

You can take some simple measures to help reduce the risk of becoming susceptible to winter bugs. Keep your immune system healthy by drinking plenty of fluids to maintain hydration and remember to regularly wash your hands to prevent infecting others.

Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke and most importantly take time to relax, rest and recover as the cold and darkness urges our body to slow down.

Keeping a healthy mind is just as important as maintaining a healthy body so consider some stress management practices such as yoga or meditation.

Remember, staying well involves a combination of all the above factors.

So let’s take this opportunity to reflect on our health, replenish and conserve energy levels by eating the right foods and adapting some lifestyle changes.
