Moving House? Read This Relocation Checklist to See If You’re Ready

29th April 2019

On average, in the UK, 100,000 households will move into a new home each month. Is your big move coming up soon?

Though there’s certainly a lot to do, you can manage it. Here is a handy relocation checklist that will help you get organized.

Do Your Research

The first thing on your moving to-do list is to research your options. Will you hire a professional moving company? Or will you rent a truck and do the move yourself with the help of some friends? Why not consider Loughborough man with van?

Get estimates in writing from all the companies you contact. Once you decide, you can make a moving budget.

Make sure to book your moving company or truck at least six weeks prior to the move. Eight weeks would be preferable.

Moving companies get fully booked. You don’t want to be left scrambling to find a solution last minute.

Book the Day off Work and Arrange for Pets

You don’t always get to choose the day you move into a new home. Ideally, you want to move in on a Friday so you have the weekend to get settled in.

But mid-week moves are fine, too. Book moving day off work.

If you have pets, arrange who will take care of them during moving day. Moving day is chaotic and there are a lot of open doors and people moving around.

Your pets will be more comfortable away from the chaos of moving.

Contact Insurance Agents

Next, contact your home, car and medical insurance companies. You will need to update your address and perhaps make other changes.

Allow yourself enough time to get new paperwork in the mail. It’s a good idea to take care of this six weeks before the big move.

Move School Records

Go to your children’s school and arrange for their records to be transferred to their new school district.

Get Moving Supplies

You’ll need boxes! More boxes than you think you’ll need. Plus you’ll need supplies like tape, bubble wrap, and permanent markers.

Many people put off packing until the week before the move. But really you can start packing very early and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Purge

You can move much easier if you get rid of things you don’t need and don’t use. Before you begin packing things in boxes, go through each room in the house and choose items to donate.

Package your donations in bags or boxes. Many local charities and thrift shops will come to your home to pick up your donations. Just give them a call and set up a date for them to come to pick up.

You can also sell unwanted items and make some cash!

Change Your Address

You can fill out a change of address form at your local post office. When you first move into a new home, you’ll get important documents by mail so it’s a good idea to change your address so you don’t miss these.

You may also want to ask a neighbor to collect any mail that comes for you. Check with that neighbor two weeks after you move and ask if any mail has come for you. Then arrange to pick it up.

Then set aside time to call or write to your bank, your HR department at work, your credit card company, and utility providers and update your address.

You will also need to arrange for utilities at your new home effective your move-in date. Review this service to find a propane gas company near you.

Forward Medical Records

Make sure your moving list of things to do includes transferring your family’s medical records to your new doctor’s office.

If you don’t have a doctor picked out yet, get copies of your records for yourself and keep them until you find a doctor.

Your Relocation Checklist

There you have it! You are ready to move thanks to your organized relocation checklist. Remember, if you start early and plan ahead, your move can go smoothly and be less stressful.
