Midfielder Steve Jennings Signs For Southport FC

Southport are pleased to announce the signing of 32-year-old midfielder Steve Jennings.

Steve Jennings career includes a wealth of experience in the Football League where he made 249 appearances, and the Scottish Premiership, making 93 appearances. Jennings is also a UEFA B qualified coach.

After several years at Everton’s Youth Academy, Steve joined Tranmere Rovers Centre of Excellence. Steve went on to make 140 appearances for Tranmere in League One before becoming Jim Gannon’s first signing at Motherwell.

Steve Jennings made 93 league appearances for Motherwell as well as reaching the Scottish Cup Final. In his final season with The Steelmen he helped the club qualify for the Champions League before transferring to Coventry City, adding 39 appearances to his tally in the Football League. Steve then spent another season at Tranmere, before making a short term move to Port Vale. He returned to Tranmere for a third time during the 2014-15 season, where he has since made another 87 appearances for the club.

Manager Alan Lewer said: “Steve Jennings has the experience that we’re looking for in midfield. He was the club captain at Tranmere. He’s an exceptional professional and he’s exactly what we need in the middle of the park. He leads by example and he’ll be fantastic on the training field and in the changing room. It’s a massive coup for the club.”

“Steve Jennings wants to get into coaching so we can help him with that and it’s useful for us in training. He loves his football, he wants to go and watch games, he can’t relax. The more people we have around us with that knowledge the better.”

“He’ll be a great leader for our football club, that’s for sure”
