Merseyside Police admits failings over murder

Merseyside Police admitted failings after an investigation into the force’s contact with a victim of domestic abuse who was murdered by her estranged husband in 2012.

Paul Holmes, aged 51, of Boswell Street, Toxteth, Liverpool, stabbed 47-year-old Becky McPhee to death in her Cherry Road home in January 2012 after she sought refuge from her violent husband.

The Independent Police Complains Commission (IPCC) investigation examined contact between Merseyside Police and McPhee prior to her being stabbed to death Holmes, 51, and concluded that the attack could have been prevented.

Merseyside Police said it accepted the watchdogs findings and said many recommendations have already been implemented and accepts the Independent Police Complaints Commission’s recommendations.

Merseyside Police wishes to pass on its sincere condolences to Rebecca’s family following her tragic death, for which Holmes was convicted of murder.
