Merseyside PCC statement on Stop and Search

Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy said: “The Chief Constable and I remain convinced that the fair and effective use of Stop and Search is one of the most powerful tools the police have at their disposal.

“Chief Constable Cooke is the national lead on serious and organised crime and one of the country’s most experienced officers. He understands how necessary it is for the power to be used to tackle violence. Merseyside Police officers have been encouraged to use Stop and Search powers and now on average conduct between 900 and 1,000 a month, yet the number of complaints remains very small.

“It is important that the powers are used proportionately and professionally. The use of Stop and Search is carefully scrutinised, by the Force, through independent advisory groups and by myself to make sure it is always used in the right way at the right times. Speaking to people across the region, I know the public are strongly supportive of the use of Stop and Search as a deterrent, to prevent crime and keep communities safe. I share their views and will continue to support them and the Chief Constable by championing its use.”
