MATCH PREVIEW | York City v Southport

Almost five years ago to the day, Southport travelled to York City for a game that had major connotations in the race for the play offs, with promotion to the Football League looking a genuine possibility.

Now the two sides face each other again, both needing three points to give them a chance of survival in non-league’s top tier.

Southport were victorious that day in 2012, and although it was eventually York who were promoted through the play offs the trip will live long in the memory for all who made it.

A loss on Tuesday will ensure that this year’s venture across the Pennines will be memorable for very different reasons, as it would leave Southport eight points from safety with eight games remaining, and extinguish yet more hope that a great escape can be achieved.

Returning striker Richard Brodie could be in line to make his first appearance since his return to the club against the side he started the season with. Goals have been hard to come by of late, with Southport failing to find the net in four of the seven games following the departure of Steve Burr.

If Brodie can recapture something close to his best form then he could prove to be an asset, and provide some hope that the Sandgrounders can get out of the mess that they find themselves in.
