Southport’s task on Saturday is to pick themselves up from last weekend’s heart-breaking defeat to Torquay United.
The Sandgrounders visit Braintree Town, where they have enjoyed some success in recent years, and will be hoping to register the first victory of the Andy Preece era.
Southport find themselves bottom of the table, eight points adrift of safety with a game in hand. If Preece is to pull off a miracle to better his exploits at Northwich Victoria back in 2009 then the feeling is that he has to start now.
Six wins in a row came too little too late for the Vics, and if results don’t pick up soon then a similarly strong finish would likely be in vain.
Preece hasn’t given up hope, and he will be hoping that the players share his optimism and show the fight required to pull a great escape off.
One man who will no longer be able to affect Southport’s survival chances is Lindon Meikle, as he returned to Barrow in the week.
Southport will, however, have Jean-Charles Coly available if he is required to make a first start for his new club.
Braintree are yet to win a game in March, but we are fast approaching the stage of the season where form means very little.
Unexpected results occur more often than they would in your average week in November, as teams mount desperate survival attempts or promotion challenges.
Not many expect Southport to survive, but until they are mathematically down they must fight for every point and pray for the unexpected.
