MATCH PREVIEW | Boreham Wood v Southport

Southport will be aiming to pick themselves up for the trip to Boreham Wood this weekend following Tuesday evening’s valiant defeat at Fleetwood Town.

Whilst ultimately disappointing, the visiting Vanarama National League side matched their SkyBet League One opponents for 180 minutes and can still take great heart from the fact that they are still unbeaten over 90 minutes in their last seven games.

The Wood were also on the road for an Emirates FA Cup replay in midweek, and like their visitors for the weekend their efforts were not enough to keep them in the competition as Notts County handed them a 2-0 defeat.

Following on from last season where they narrowly escaped relegation, the Hertfordshire outfit have been something of a surprise package in the league this time around. They currently lie five points outside the play-offs, tenth in the table, and looking certain to beat last season’s points tally of the “magic” 50.

The form book can be thrown out of the window for the week, as Boreham Wood have specialised in shock results this season. Victories at home to Forest Green Rovers and away at Dagenham & Redbridge have been cancelled out by losses at home to Maidstone and last week’s defeat away at Bromley, and it is these inconsistencies that can derail any hopes of a play-off push.

A win for Southport could lift them above Torquay and within two points of Solihull Moors, whereas a loss could see a return to the bottom four if other results go against them.

The table serves as a reminder that whilst recent weeks have seen a remarkable turnaround, the Sandgrounders are by no means out of the woods and it is therefore critical that the momentum is maintained.
