Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after Virginia Street incident

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after attacking a woman at a home on Virginia Street.

Police have swarmed upon a house in Southport this morning, including CID and forensics officers who are conducting investigations inside the property.

Multiple officers were seen protecting the property exterior while investigations were conducted inside. Officers could be seen exploring both upstairs and downstairs inside the property through the open front door.

Officers also searched down an alleyway next to the property.

Door to door enquiries have now begun.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm officers are currently at a house in Virginia Street in Southport.

“Emergency services were contacted at just after 9.30am today, Friday 25th June, following reports a woman in her 40s had been assaulted and suffered knife wounds to her neck and abdomen.

“The woman has been taken to hospital for treatment for her injuries.

“A 50 year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and house-to-house and forensic enquiries are being carried out.

“Detective Inspector Paul Gillies said: “The investigation is still in the early stages and we are working to establish what has taken place. We are not at the moment looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.
