Man arrested for driving car at police after threatening Job Centre staff

A man has been arrested after allegedly driving his car towards police officers.

At approximately 4.30pm yesterday (Monday) afters attended the Job Centre on Eastbank Street upon reports a man was behaving aggressively towards staff.

No police officers or Job Centre staff were hurt during the incident.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We have arrested a man following an incident on Eastbank Street, Southport today (Monday 10 January).

“At around 4.30pm we received a report of a man behaving aggressively in the Job Centre.

“It was reported that he had assaulted and made threats towards a member of Job Centre staff.

“Officers attended and the man was reported to deliberately drive his car into a police vehicle at the scene.

“Police detained and arrested the man on suspicion of affray, attempted section 18 assault, assaulting a police officer, common assault, resisting arrest and dangerous driving.

“He will be taken into custody and questioned by officers.

“No injuries were reported and no weapons were seen.

“CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police.”

Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton said: “We are in the extremely early stages of an investigation into an incident on Eastbank Street this afternoon and we would urge anyone with any information to come forward.

“The swift arrest today shows that we will not tolerate people being subject to violence and abuse while simply carrying out their work at the heart of our communities.

“While we have made an arrest, our enquiries continue and so if you witnessed the incident this afternoon, please come forward. Any information you hold could be vital to our investigation.”
