Male with self-inflicted stab wounds tasered by police in late night standoff

27th September 2021

A town centre street was closed off overnight after a man stabbed himself before a tense stand off with police.

OTS News understands from stunned neighbours awoken by the commotion in the early hours of this morning that police may have deployed a taser to subdue the man before detaining him under the mental health act.

Officers say they were called to a property on Coronation Walk just before 3.30am this morning where they discovered a man suffering what were thought to be self-inflicted injuries to his neck and body.

Eye witnesses say the male had been causing ‘a commotion’ in the build up to the incident and neighbours called 999 out of concern.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said “We attended at a property in Coronation Walk in Southport at 3.20am today, Monday 27th September, following reports of concern for the safety of a male.

“The male had suffered injuries to his neck and body which are believed to be self-inflicted.

“He was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening, and has been detained under the mental health act.”
