Macmillan Cancer Support scoops award at Southport Flower Show

19th August 2022

Cancer charity Macmillan has scooped an award at Southport Flower Show after its showcase garden wowed judges.

Macmillan’s garden– named ‘A Growing Legacy’ – celebrates gifts left to the charity in the wills of its supporters.

The garden features a path representing people who have walked their own cancer journey and a statement sculpture featuring handmade balls of seed, earth and clay.

Designed to make visitors pause and reflect on the impact of cancer, the garden celebrates and remembers people who have chosen to leave gifts to Macmillan in their wills and encourages visitors to consider leaving a similar donation to the charity in the future.

The showcase was awarded the Perpetual Challenge Trophy by the Southport and District Licensed Victuallers Association. It recognises the efforts and commitment of the garden’s designers – landscape architects Max Murrell and Sarah Craft – who built the garden over a two-week period.

Jessica O’Brien, Legacy Promotions Officer at Macmillan, said: “It’s fantastic to be recognised by the judges and we’re thrilled our garden has picked up an award. If you’re planning on visiting the flower show this weekend, please come and visit us so you can see our award-winning garden for yourself.

“We wanted to use our garden to pay tribute to all those people who choose to leave us a gift in their will while also encouraging our brilliant supporters both new and old to consider leaving a legacy donation in the future.

“With more and more people living with cancer each year, gifts in wills will be needed more than ever. One in two people will get cancer in their lifetime and by 2030 an estimated 4 million people are expected to be living with the disease. As the number of people diagnosed increases, so does the need for our services.

“Gifts in wills help us be there with the clinical, financial and emotional support that’s so incredibly important when you’re living with cancer.”
