Love your lungs and give up smoking on World No Tobacco Day

23rd May 2019
World No Tobacco Day

The focus of World No Tobacco Day this year on 31 May 2019 is on tobacco and lung health and the multiple ways that exposure to tobacco affects the health of people’s lungs worldwide. This includes lung cancer, chronic respiratory disease, tuberculosis and air pollution.

Tracy Sutton from the Quit Squad said:

“The most effective measure to improve lung health is to stop smoking. Coughs, colds, wheezing and asthma are just the start. Smoking can cause fatal diseases such as pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer. Smoking causes 84 percent of deaths from lung cancer and 83 percent of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). After stopping smoking for 48 hours carbon monoxide will be eliminated from the body and your lungs start to clear out mucus and other smoking debris. After 3 to 9 months, coughs, wheezing and breathing problems improve as lung function increases by up to 10 percent. As part of this campaign, the Quit Squad, your local stop smoking service, will be highlighting the  the harms of tobacco and tobacco alternatives like Grinds on lung health and how you can be supported to quit.

“People are four times more likely to stop smoking for good with the help of NHS services than with will power alone. World No Tobacco Day is a great time to take the first steps to a completely smokefree future and all the benefits that comes with it. Call 0800 328 6297 or search Quit Squad online and quit now with free help and support from Quit Squad, your local stop smoking service.”

In addition to drop-in clinics (for which no appointments are required) and one-to-one sessions, the Quit Squad also offers group sessions in the community and operates in Central, North, East and West Lancashire.
