Local Students Get a Taste for Work

More than 20 students from Hugh Baird College have successfully completed work placements with Sefton Council as part of their course, gaining vital on the job experience.

 In a bid to help inform student’s career choices and develop skills, Sefton Council has teamed up with Hugh Baird College to offer specific work placements to students studying a number of different courses.  The placements form an integral part of the study programmes on offer at the college and allow students to put their learning into practice in a real work environment .

Students worked closely with the Investment Programmes & Infrastructure and Parks & Greenspaces teams at the council for a set period. Each student was provided with a work programme allowing them to develop a broad understanding of what each job role entailed, with council officers commenting on their skill levels, hard work and dedication.

Students working with the Investment Programmes & Infrastructure team covered roles such as Building Control, Mechanical Engineering, Quantity Surveying and Architectural Technician.

 In the Parks and Greenspaces team students got involved in gardening tasks, painting park furniture and helped local charity YKids prepare beds for planting in North Park Community Garden.

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, said: “I am delighted that we are working closely with local colleges, such as Hugh Baird College, to provide valuable work placement opportunities.

 “I have heard many positive things about this group of students and I wish them well for the future.”

John Kendal, Study Programme Coordinator at Hugh Baird College said: “Work experience placements form an essential and valuable part of our learners’ Study Programme.

“The placements partnership that is developing between the College and Sefton Council is exactly the kind of effective employer engagement that really benefits the development of our students and helps ensure they are work ready when they leave the College.

“I would like to thank Sefton Council for the outstanding opportunities they have provided our learners and hope the partnership continues to flourish.”
