Litterazzi help make Southport sparkle ahead of flower show

15th August 2017

Southport’s litter heroes donned their Rubbish Friends jackets and sprang into action to make the resort sparkle for this year’s Flower Show.

Local Lib Dem councillors turned out to swell the ranks of the litterazzi as the town prepares for the influx of visitors associated with the iconic garden spectacular.

“Our litter heroes have one again swept to the rescue,”  said Councillor Pat Keith who, along with her ward colleague Councillor Sue McGuire,  founded Rubbish Friends in 2012

“ We cleared 23 bags of litter that had been simply tossed on the ground.  It’s infuriating as people only have to walk a few steps to the bin – it’s a clear case of a lack of civic pride.”

Councillor McGuire said: “ We want our town to look its best for tourist and locals alike.  The great majority of people take pride in their environment but, as we find on our regular litter picks, there are some who just don’t care.

“The amount of litter could be drastically reduced if people would just think about the environment before they discard their rubbish.”

Lorraine Cookson, a founder member of Rubbish friends said: “There’s a sense of pride in a job well done and while I hope people will stop dropping litter – until that day dawns – I would encourage anyone who loves Southport to come along and become a Rubbish Friend. We’re all very friendly and it’s good exercise.”
