Lib Dems whitewash Southport
Southport Lib Dems have whitewashed all seven wards up for grabs in the town.
The party, although first fearing the loss of Dukes ward and a fight on their hands in Ainsdale, we’re delighted to find they had won all seven seats available on the night – a devastating blow for the local Tory party.
Councillor Tony Dawson held onto his Dukes Ward seat while long time candidate Lynn Thompson finally made it onto the council in Ainsdale.
Southport Labour Party made impressive inroads and finished second to the Libs in a number of wards – with conservative candidates trailing by some margin.
This is the first time since the local election charter was drawn up in 1858 that any party has won all seven wards in Southport in one night.
