ANCASHIRE COUNTY Cricket Club is delighted to announce that Southport and Birkdale Cricket Club has signed a staging agreement which will see the Trafalgar Road based ground host a County Championship game in each of the next three years.
County Championship fixtures at the seaside town have proved to be very popular for members and supporters of the Red Rose in recent years and Ashley Giles’ men will return to the seaside resort on Saturday 16th July for a four-day match against Durham.
It marks the first time that Lancashire has reached a formal staging agreement with an outground – one which will allow Southport and Birkdale to redevelop player and spectator facilities for the ground.
Southport will be committed to undertaking a series of improvements which will include larger dressing rooms and an improved, groundwide Public Address system as well as increased spectator facilities.
Speaking about the agreement, Lancashire County Cricket Club Chief Executive Daniel Gidney said: “Although Emirates Old Trafford is our home, it is important that we play some of our games at outgrounds. In recent years Southport have really impressed us with their desire and enthusiasm in staging Lancashire fixtures.
“By offering this guarantee of fixtures up to an including 2018 it will enable the club to embark on a programme of refurbishment and facilities upgrades.
“They are committing themselves to raising a significant amount in funds over the three years and we are really delighted by that ambition.”
Tony Elwood, chairman of Southport & Birkdale CC added: “We have enjoyed a fantastic relationship with Lancashire County Cricket Club over recent seasons and we are delighted that this commitment will enable us to proceed with our proposed plans to improve our facilities for players and spectators.
“It has been our focus to host regular first class cricket in Southport and the offer of a three-year staging agreement with Lancashire is a wonderful fillip for Southport & Birkdale.
“Hosting a County match is a lot of hard work, of course, but we’re not afraid of that and, having hosted three Championship fixtures over the past five years, we know what needs to be done. That work starts now
“Southport & Birkdale is a tremendous place to play and watch County cricket, as spectators are close to the action wherever they sit and that makes for a terrific atmosphere, so this is great news for our Club, it’s great news for Lancashire cricket fans and it’s great news for the local economy.”
