KGV’s talented biologists achieve success

BUDDING biologists from Southport‘s King George V College have been awarded prizes in a prestigious biology competition.

A handful of talented Biology A level students from KGV took part in the event, organised by Edge Hill University.

The prestigious ‘Biology Olympiad’ saw KGV students undertaking intricate activities such as DNA extraction, insect identification, thermal imaging processes and a demanding quiz.

Two teams of KGV students competed against 17 teams from all over the North West, including Manchester, Wigan, Wirral, Cheshire and Liverpool.

Sophie Feeney, Course Leader for A level Biology at KGV, said: ‘We were delighted to have this amazing opportunity to take part in this fascinating event.

‘This event really showcased the practical and manipulation skills needed for Biology A level, and was a really interesting opportunity for KGV students to see biology in action at university level.  Our students also got to meet students from other colleges and it was lovely event.’

A level Biology has a long standing record of academic success at King George V College, with more than three quarters of KGV A level Biology students achieving high grades as part of KGV’s best ever A level results last summer.

King George V College is also renowned for its prowess in all three disciplines of A level science, having recently progressed two students into Medicine at Cambridge University – one of the world’s most renowned destinations for that course.
