Is it possible to play football without spitting?
Premiership players have been advised not to spit during matches but they continue to do so.
Spitting is disgusting at all times. It’s unhygienic and unhealthy, particularly if you spit close to other people. Footballers, like the rest of us, wouldn’t spit indoors so they shouldn’t do it on a football pitch especially when a match is being televised live.
If players are spitting near other people it could certainly increase the risk of passing on infections. Spitting is a nasty habit that should be discouraged at all levels.
Is it really an unedifying and unnecessary habit, like picking your nose or leaving the toilet seat up? And why is it that is seems to afflict football rather than other sports? After all, when was the last time you saw a cricketer or golfer spit? Your thoughts are welcomed below.
