Info for Southport Motorists on NW Motorways for Monday 7 July  – Sunday 13 July 2014

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 4 July and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Barthomley

Overnight work is underway to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at junction 16 of the M6.  The scheme will provide a third lane on the north and southbound exit sliproads and the approach on the A500.  Additional traffic lights will also be installed.

There will be different phases of traffic management in place depending on what work is taking place at the time. This will include exit and entry slip road closures, full closures of the A500 and B5078 and a temporary speed limit of 50mph.

24-hour narrow lanes will be in place on the A500 west of junction 16 for certain elements of the work. Two laybys on the eastbound carriageway of the A500 will also be closed during the work. Two on the westbound carriageway will form part of the scheme and be closed permanently.

Traffic levels permitting, work will be carried out from 8.00pm to 7.00am on Mondays to Thursdays, 9.00pm to 9.00am on Fridays, 7.00pm to 11.00am on Saturdays and 7.00pm to 6.00am on Sundays.

Notification and signing of all closures will be provided in advance, and the project is expected to be completed by the middle of December.

M6 Junctions 20 to 21 Thelwall Viaduct

Work on the Thelwall Viaduct has almost been completed, and temporary contraflow lane, 40mph speed limit and narrow lanes have now been removed. Joint replacement work on the viaduct is still required on the northbound exit slip road at junction 21 but this will be limited to occasional overnight lane and slip road closures at weekends.

M6 Junction 32 Broughton Interchange

A project is being carried out to reduce congestion around the motorway junction which connects the M6 to the Blackpool-bound M55. There will be narrow lanes, plus some overnight slip road and carriageway closures until the project is completed in October.

Any overnight closures will take place between 9.00pm (or 10.00pm on Fridays) and 6.00am the next morning at the following locations with clearly-signed diversions in place via the A59, A5085 and A6:

•           M6 northbound carriageway  between junction 31 and junction 32

•           M6 northbound carriageway through junction 32

•           M6 Junction 31 northbound entry slip road;

•           M6 Junction 31A northbound exit slip road, and

•           M6 northbound to M55 westbound link road

In addition, speed restrictions of 50mph will be in place along sections of the M6 and M55.  These will be in place until the work has been completed.

At times the hard shoulder will be used as a running lane to maintain capacity. A free break down service will be in operation.   Vehicles over 1.95m in width will be banned from using the outside lane through the roadworks and wide loads will be expected to straddle the two running lanes.

M53, junctions 3-4

Work to repair the central reservation barrier on the M53 between junctions 3 and 4 has started. There will be lane 3 closures in both directions during the work, which is expected to be completed mid- July. Speed limits will also be in place.

M60 Junction 24, Denton

Phase two of Denton Island improvements is underway at junction 24 of the M60, where the motorway meets the M67 and the A57 local road – a key commuter route into Manchester city centre.

Work to remodel the westbound approaches to the roundabout from the M67 and A57 will involve over 100 yards of both carriageways merging to form the A57(T) and allow new arrangements for traffic heading onto the roundabout for the M60 and A57, including providing a dedicated left turn slip road from the new A57 (T) onto the clockwise M60.

Other improvements include:

•           New traffic signals and signs gantry on the A57(T) approaches onto the roundabout

•           New LED lighting on roundabout approaches

•           Resurfacing and new road markings – reflecting the remodelling – along the roundabout carriageway

•           New signing to help improve clarity and traffic flow around the roundabout

•           Improvements to Oldham Street pedestrian underpass

The whole project is due to be completed by Friday 19 December with most of the work carried out overnight between 10pm and 5am and 7am on weekends

Traffic management includes the following closures:

•           Some full carriageway closures of the westbound M67 and A57 towards the roundabout

•           Partial overnight closures of either southern or northern sections of the roundabout with diversions in place

•           Some 24 hour lane closures on approaches to the roundabout.

•           Short sections of the A57 local authority route – both to the west and east of the roundabout
