Info for Southport motorists on NW motorways for Monday 14 – Sunday 20 July 2014
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 11 July and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.
M6 Junction 16 Barthomley
Overnight work is underway to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at junction 16 of the M6. The scheme will provide a third lane on the north and southbound exit slip roads and the approach on the A500. Additional traffic lights will also be installed. There will be some overnight closures of slip roads and the A500 and B5078 at different stages of the project. A temporary speed limit of 50mph is also in place, and the project is expected to be completed by the middle of December.
M6 Junctions 20 to 21 Thelwall Viaduct
Work on the Thelwall Viaduct has almost been completed, and the temporary contraflow lane, 40mph speed limit and narrow lanes have now been removed. Joint replacement work on the viaduct is still required on the northbound exit slip road at junction 21 but this will be limited to occasional overnight lane and slip road closures at weekends.
M6 Junction 32 Broughton Interchange
A project is being carried out to reduce congestion around the motorway junction which connects the M6 to the Blackpool-bound M55. There will be narrow lanes, plus some overnight slip road and carriageway closures until the project is completed in October.
M6 Junction 38 Brough
The southbound entry slip will be closed overnight for maintenance work between 8pm and 8am from Thursday 17 until Saturday 19 July. A diversion will be in place.
M53 Junctions 3 Heswall to Junction 4 Clatterbridge
Work to repair the central reservation barrier on the M53 between junctions 3 and 4 has started. There will be lane 3 closures in both directions during the work, which is expected to be completed in July. Reduced speed limits will also be in place.
M60 Junction 8 Sale to M62 Junction 20 Rochdale
A major project to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester will begin on Monday 14 July. The first stage of the project will see engineers carry out site surveys and ground investigation work. Some sections of the hard shoulder will be closed although vehicles will be able to get through the cones in an emergency. From Monday 21 July, a temporary steel barrier to protect road workers will be installed in the hard shoulder between junction 18 of the M62 at the M60/M66 interchange and junction 20 at Rochdale. At the same time, a 50mph speed limit will be introduced on the M62 section, to ensure the safety of the workforce and motorists. The temporary speed limit, enforced with temporary average speed cameras, will then gradually be extended across the length of the smart motorway route over the following weeks.
M60 Junction 24 Denton
Phase two of the Denton Island improvements is underway at junction 24 of the M60, where the motorway meets the M67 and the A57– a key commuter route into Manchester city centre. The whole project is due to be completed by Friday 19 December with most of the work carried out overnight. Some road and lane closures will be necessary.
There will be daytime traffic lights in place for electricity work 8.30am to 4.30pm until Friday 18 July.
