This year has been extremely fruitful on winnings. In January, an anonymous player from Mount Maunganui won the Lotto First Division and bagged $1 million. The ticket was purchased at Bayfair as well. Isn’t it great proof that you can play lotto online and win real money without spending much?
Four months later, in May, Mount Maunganui was in the news once again. The winning ticket made its owner a millionaire and helped to increase the Powerball up to $14 million.

About New Zealand Lotteries Commission
Also known as the Lotto New Zealand, it operates lotteries in the country. It has been founded back in 1987 and works according to the Gambling Act 2003. There are different games on offer including lotto, keno, and scratch cards. Lotto’s top prize reaches millions of dollars and is the most popular game at the moment. Online games or Instant Kiwi, can be played by locals who are older than 18 years. When purchasing a lotto ticket, you can opt for extra features – Lotto Strike and Powerball.
Profits from the lotteries are managed by the NZ Lottery Grants Board. Which, in turn, uses these funds for arts, sports, recreation, and other social programs. Since 1987, the board has received over $4 billion of contributions. The main recipients of the funds are Creative New Zealand and the NZ Film Commission.
The first lotto game took place on August 1, 1987, and the top prize equaled $359,808. Other games were added later: Instant Kiwi in 1989, Lotto Strike and Keno in 1993 and 1994, Powerball – 2001, and Bullseye – 2009.
The biggest prize that was won by one ticket equaled $44,066,667. The Powerball draw took place on November 9, 2016. The ticket was purchased at Dairy Flat Food, Auckland. The 1593 draw, by the way, has set another record – the biggest number of tickets sold. And it is not surprising, considering such a high jackpot!
