How to make money in foreign languages: possible professions

Interpreter

It is easiest to choose a job in the profile and get a job as an interpreter. This profession has many different directions.

Also, if you have good English skills you can teach English in China which helps to boost your career.

Simultaneous interpreter. These specialists are indispensable for negotiations with partners from other countries and therefore needed in many large firms and enterprises. Also, make sure to do some research on simultaneous translation equipment because they are vastly used in this type of translation.

Translator of fiction texts. These employees are needed by publishing houses that collaborate with foreign authors and publish their novels in their native language.

Translator of technical documentation. Employees with this profile are required by plants and factories that produce products for export or work with foreign equipment. They might also specialize in uscis translation, ensuring that all documents meet the stringent requirements for immigration or other processes in the United States.

Translator of specialized literature. In addition to literary and technical texts, you also need to translate any specialized literature: economic, legal, historical, etc.

It is easier to get a job in one of these professions if you speak a fairly rare language such as Japanese, Chinese, etc. There are too many specialists in English, German or French on the job market and competition among them is very high.

Tutor

Foreign language training is necessary for students who will be taking the exam in this subject. Many of them begin studying with a tutor from as early as 8th or 9th grade.

In addition, tutors are often needed for students (who want to improve their knowledge) and young professionals (knowledge of a foreign language is an important competitive advantage).

You can find clients in social networks or through advertisements, and conduct classes at home, at the student’s home, or remotely (e.g. via Skype).

Of course, a foreign language tutor, in addition to his or her knowledge, is required to have certain qualities of character:

  • responsibility;
  • punctuality;
  • stress resistance.

In addition, you need a pedagogical talent, because not always those who know something themselves, can teach it to another person.

Teacher and tutor

This profession is a more stable version of tutoring. Teachers work at a school, college, or university, have a specific workload, an approved work schedule, and long summer vacations.

At the same time, they have to keep strict reporting documents: fill out journals, develop curricula. In addition, university and institute professors have to engage in research activities: preparing publications, upgrading their qualifications, etc.

But it is always easy to find clients – many students often need an essay assistant.

It is better to enter a team of professional service. So you will be guaranteed:

  • regular orders;
  • privacy.
  • this way of earning is convenient with a flexible schedule and the fact that you can set the amount of work yourself.

Other options:

  • Sign a contract with some company, receive texts from it and send a translated version.
  • Find texts in a foreign language yourself, translate them and sell them on copywriting exchanges.
  • Interpreting texts: for example, transcribing audio recordings of negotiations or translating foreign films and TV series.

When choosing the type of earnings, consider not only the level of salary, but also the working conditions: online business gives more freedom of action, but also requires a high level of self-discipline.
