Holocaust Memorial Day (Southport 2013)
Residents in Southport remembered victims of the Holocaust during a memorial ceremony at Christ Church, Lord Street, Southport this afternoon (Sunday 27th January 2013)
This year’s ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Sefton Cllr Kevin Cluskey.
The Annual Service was organised by Sefton Council, with assistance from the Association of Jewish Ex Service Men & Women, Sefton Equalities Partnership, King George V College Southport, Sefton CVS, Unison and Christ Church.
Today’s ceremony was the 13th tribute paid in Sefton which is held on the nearest Sunday to Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD).
The Mayor, Councillors, council officers and members of the public all took part in a minute’s silence to celebrate the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.
Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Kevin Cluskey, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an annual event which provides an opportunity to commemorate victims, honour survivors and to make a personal commitment to stand up to hatred. “It provides an opportunity for everyone to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides and apply them to the present day to create a safer, better future. “At the Annual Holocaust Memorial Service we share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today.”
