The Observatory in Hesketh Park reopens on Sunday 26th September, after an eighteen month period of closure during lockdown. “Open Days” will also be held on 31st October and 28th November. With the exception of hand sanitising on entry, these public events will be run without COVID restrictions.

A visit to the observatory is a must! This 19th century, Grade II listed building houses a  large refracting telescope, supported on a working, clock-driven, equatorial mount. The upper wooden structure and telescope are a hundred and fifty-three years old. They first arrived in the Park on 21st August 1901.

Southport Astronomical Society host these events annually, from February to November, on the last Sunday of the month, from 10.30 until 16.30. Entry is free to children, dogs and well behaved adults.

The observatory is managed and operated by the Society, under a Lease between them and Sefton Council. This will ensure that the observatory is properly maintained, and used for “The benefit of residents in the Southport area, especially children”.

Society members also give talks in the observatory to adult and youth groups about the telescope and astronomy in general. To arrange for a talk, email: ramount@talktalk.net
