Keen gardeners in Burscough are being invited to take part in a competition run by Burscough Parish Council, who wants to find out who has the best hanging baskets or planters within the town.

The competition, titled “Bloomin’ Burscough”, encourages residents to get green fingered and put their gardening skills to good use in order to help make Burscough bloom with beauty. The Parish Council is hoping that it will be a light-hearted, fun competition for all in the community to get involved with.

The competition will see two distinct categories, Best single or group of Hanging Baskets/Planters and Best Front Garden, with prizes including £100 for the persons who come first in each category, as well as a winner’s engraved shield to take home for the year. There will also be a prize of £50 for each runner up in the two categories.

All entries must be visible from the road side and without need to enter gardens.  The judges are local people, nominated by others for their love and knowledge of plants, who will visit each garden that has taken part in the competition and score against a set of criteria including colour, interest and quality of planting.

The Parish Council are delighted that New Mayor, Cllr Liz Savage has agreed to award the Prizes in this first year of what is hoped to develop to be a regular event in Burscough’s calendar.  Cllr Savage said: “I’m delighted to have been asked to present the first awards for this competition.  These events are always fantastic for villages as they engage village pride.  Burscough is already a beautiful village and I’m sure this competition will add to its attractiveness.  I hope many people will take part and make this a success”

Applications for the competition can be found at www.burscoughpc.co.uk  or collected from Burscough Parish Council office at Martland Mill, Burscough, from 9.30 am-4.30pm, Monday to Thursday.  Completed entry forms can be returned by email, post or hand and the deadline for applications is Weds 13th July 2016
