Veterans in Southport say they are heartbroken after a hugely popular respite centre for armed forces personnel and their families was confirmed to be shutting down today.

Staff at Byng House on the Promenade have been given the official word that the popular respite centre has been closed down by penny pushing accountants who decided the holiday home was not financially viable any more.

Staff day they were never consulted and are heartbroken.

The Royal British Legion’s director general, Charles Byrne, said: “The community we serve and our supporters deserve the very best from us, and it is our responsibility to ensure the Legion is providing relevant services that meet the needs of today’s Armed Forces community, and that the generous donations given to us by the public are used in the most impactful way.”
